Yes, Wal-Mart would get more support for a downtown location that is considerably smaller. The only problem is they don't know
"small." Somehow that word isn't in their vocabulary. And it is my understanding that "neighborhood markets" which can be around 40,000 square feet consist mostly of groceries.
Wal-Mart doesn't really want to build small. Why? Because they couldn't have the huge selection of merchandise. And why do they want that much stuff? So customers will do ALL THEIR SHOPPING at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart wants to be the only place you buy anything from.
But just suppose they built in our downtown. This means that customers could shop not only at Wal-Mart, but at OTHER downtown shops as well. And does Wal-Mart want that? Probably not. They come into town claiming to be everyone's friend, but don't believe it for a moment. If they came here, and our local businesses went under, that wouldn't bother them one little bit.
Would they be welcome if they offered to build a small store downtown? Probably. And all of this makes me wonder just what property they were ORIGINALLY looking at? What downtown property did Cliff Donaldson steer them away from anyway?
