Wednesday TOTT Comments

No, not the divisive comment by our friendly member of CARD but the comment concerning closed Wal-Mart stores. The caller advised people to do some internet research before making anti-Wal-Mart statements - statements such as "Wal-Mart has many closed stores."

Unfortunately the caller did not take his own advice. Of course Wal-Mart has many closed stores - about 350 of them at any given time. They have their own damn realty website for heavens sake. How hard is it to find that on the internet?

There are also newspaper articles such as this one, or this one or this one. The last article is really important. Wal-Mart closed a store in Jonquière, Quebec because:
The store "has struggled from the beginning..."
Jonquière, QU has a population 10 times that of Saranac Lake.

The problem here is that Wal-Mart supporters have only a few websites that can provide them with favorable "facts" about Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, those sites are all owned by Wal-Mart or by Edelman PR.

There can be no question that Wal-Mart supporters are being coached by Wal-Mart. How do they come up with "information" that supports Wal-Mart?... well, by being told by Wal-Mart to gather that "information" off of the Wal-Mart web sites, which, as you point out, are the only pro-Wal-Mart web sites out there.... not exactly like getting the information from a legitimate independent source.

Yes, Wal-Mart does have about 350 empty stores in the United States. Perhaps, Wal-Mart supporters should read Al Norman's book "The Case Against Wal-Mart." Norman who hates Wal-Mart has dealt with this corporation for many years. He is considered an expert on this company, and how to fight them off in your community.
When he was interviewed and asked recently what most annoyed him about Wal-Mart, Al replied that it was all their empty stores. Wal-Mart calls their empty stores
"dark" stores, but empty is still empty to me.
And as far as the closed store in Canada goes, we all know why Wal-Mart closed it. This store had SUCCEEDED IN BRINGING A UNION. Wal-Mart HATES unions. Why? Because a union would demand more for Wal-Mart employees that WAL-MART HAS NO DESIRE TO GIVE! A union would want more money for employees, and obviously health coverage for everyone. To avoid having a unionized store, Wal-Mart simply closed this store. Not a profitable store? I rather doubt that.

On a related note, I challenge WM supporters (who were displeased with the anti-WM film being showed on local public access cable, and are now counter-attacking by using a WM film starring Lee Scott) to find a pro-WM film made by someone OTHER THAN WALMART. Seems to me that running a pro-WM film made by WM is like running a pro-ENRON film made by Kenneth Lay!
